My thanks to juries...
I recently tried a case that arguably wasn't the 'biggest deal' in the world. It took about a day. The jury returned a verdict for our client. We wish it had been for more.
And, it was a Big Deal for the client. It was her day in court. She got to tell her story and to be heard. Everyone treated the case with respect, quiet dignity and order.
While I may disagree with the jury's verdict amount, I bow to them for their participation, their patience, their three hours of deliberation. No one threw anything. No one shouted. No one said I want to go home. No one said I'm bored.
The basic truth of the matter is that citizen participation on juries is a cornerstone to our way of life. Think of the thousands of county courthouses spread all over the country that week in, week out are being used to decide all sorts of cases that bear on the health, safety and order of our communities.
It is not only admirable but stunningly remarkable how often, how very, very often those sitting juries "get it right".
My hat is off to them, to you who sit. Take a bow - You are America!
