Glenn coaches Wando Mock Trial

Wando High School  has organized a new Mock Trial Team. Sponsored by the S. C. Bar Related Education Division, the team is under the leadership of Mrs. Nancy W. Cranford, an English teacher at Wando. Attorney coaches include Mrs. Emily Johnston, Mrs. Michelle Suggs, and Mr. Vernon F. Glenn. Wando teachers Mrs. Lisa Cain and Mrs. Kathy Shertz are also assisting. Team members include sophomore Andra Oprisan, and freshmen Fleetwood Fleming, Malcolm Glenn, Dawn Lewis, Paige Mckeithan, James McManus, Jamie Robeson, Allie Molinari, and Matthew Ramsey.

The goals of the Mock Trial program are to educate students about the American judicial system and the fundamentals of litigation. Another objective is to increase cooperation, respect, and support between the community and the legal profession. Through participation in the MockTrial program, students will sharpen their basic skills such as listening, speaking, writing, reading, and analyzing. The goal is tolearn and practice the meaning of good citizenship in a democracy through participation in our legal system.

Mock Trial teams from across the state have been preparing a mock criminal case concerning the 1919 World Series bribery and gambling charges against "Shoeless" Joe Jackson. Teams must prepare for both the defense and prosecution sides. District competition was held in Charleston on February 25, where Wando High emerged as a district winner, advancing to the state championship March 17-18 in Lexington, South Carolina. At the state championship, Fleetwood Fleming won two Best Witness Awards; Allie Molinari won Best Witness, and Paige McKeithan won Best Attorney. Read more...
